You must be wondering what Truffle hunt adventure race actually is?
Well, this one is anything but an ordinary race. It is a mini-adventure race in which teams of two find their way to a hidden metaphorical truffle through orientation, running and mountain biking. It is one of the variants of the treasure hunt, because the contestants do not know until the very start how long the race will last, what its length is, or what theywould be exactly doing. Along the way, they will have to overcome the language barrier because most of the tasks involve the Glagolitic alphabet, which has been the leitmotif of the race since the beginning. Given that the race is held during the Weekend Festival of Istrian Truffles, there are some specific rules, such as mandatory truffle-finding equipment – a spatula and a dog. Or pig. The dog does not have to be alive, but it has to be three-dimensional, so the teams can bring everything, from small plastic to huge stuffed dogs.
Finding the symbolic truffle requires not only physical fitness but also ingenuity and intellectual effort. You have to translate from Glagolitic to Latin on a math quiz, answer trick questions like what time is it in Hum, where the old clock on the bell tower is stopped at exactly 2:30 or multiply the number of steps from Fontana square in Buzet to the old town Buzet by the cosine of 90, with the fact that is the cosine of 90 equals – zero. How to register?
It is very easy.
By clicking the “REGISTER” button, you will fill in all the required information, including the name of your dog or pig. Once you register, your registration will be stored but will not be visible until you pay the entry fee in full.
Once you pay the entry fee, your registration will become public and will appear in the list of registered teams (see the main menu).
Starting numbers are assigned according to the order of payments. Why is this important? We don’t know yet, but we will surely complicate something with it.
BASIC RULES
It’s a mini adventure race combined with a treasure hunt, in this case for a truffle. The race is held in the wider area of Buzet, the disciplines are running and MTB cycling with the addition of orientation, various tasks, surprises and other complications.
There is no information before the race so we are listing here everything we possibly can. All surprises await you only when you arrive in Buzet and pick up the starter pack. What we can announce is the following:
- the race is a two-member teams race
- the team can be completely male, completely female or mixed, each category is ranked separately
- each team must have mandatory equipment consisting of two MTB bikes, two helmets, basic first aid kit, GSM device, waterproof felt-tip pen and truffle-finding equipment that includes a spatula and a dog or a pig
- the race is time limited. Crossing the finish line after time limit has expired, you will automatically be disqualified
- the concept of the race is such that the team can give up the truffle hunt at any moment and return to the finish line. All teams will be included in the final results, and their ranking will depend on the number of controls found, points collected and tasks solved.
Gathering before the race, confirmation of registration and collection of starting numbers/packs will take place in Buzet, in the big tent of the Truffle Weekend event at the Masimova škuja parking lot.
MANDATORY EQUIPMENT
Each team must have the following throughout the race:
- a basic first aid kit
- 2 mobile phones with internet connectivity
- 2 compasses
- 2 bicycle helmets
- 2 bicycles
- mandatory truffle hunting equipment /see slide below/
MANDATORY TRUFFLE HUNTING EQUIPMENT
The mandatory truffle equipment consists of the following:
- dog or pig /we do not recommend live versions/*
- truffle scoop /be creative/**
* the dog or pig and truffle scoop must be three-dimensional, do not bring us pictures. You will not start without the required truffle equipment. Bring your dog or pig mascot to the registration desk where you will all be photographed together. The photo will be included in the gallery from which the expert jury will vote for the Golden Muzzle award.
** from 2025, the Golden Muzzle award will be given to the team with the most creative name, mascot and mascot name, in line with the theme of the race
START FEE
The entry fee can be paid in three time frames:
- “NOW’S THE TIME” from April 20, 2026. until September 30, 2026 – 20% reduced price
- “WAITING FOR THE LAST MOMENT” from October 1, 2026. until October 15, 2026 – normal price
- “I WANT TO SPONSOR A COMPLICATOR” from October 16, 2026. until October 22, 2026 – abnormal price
THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TEAMS IS 100. If the demand exceeds the maximum number of teams, a waiting list will be created.

Entry fee for the “WAITING FOR THE LAST MOMENT” time frame:
- men’s teams €100
- mixed teams €90

Entry fee for the “I WANT TO SPONSOR A COMPLICATOR” time frame:

WHAT DOES THE START FEE COVER?
The entry fee includes the following:
- truffle hunting licence for 2026. (not to be confused with the permit to collect the truffles – that’s completely different story)
- event organisation, maps and various accessories needed for the race
- T-shirt for each team member
- awards and prizes
- refreshment station at the course
- a hot meal after the race
- 10€ voucher to spend in the bar after the race
- complication and torture
START FEE REFUND PROCEDURE
We hope for the best, but we’re just wanna be sure everything is covered. There sre several scenarios set for extraordinary circumstances, pandemics, disasters and the extinction of truffle dogs:
- If the race is canceled for any reason due to force majeure by October 19, 2026, we will refund the entry fee in the amount of 100% of the paid amount (minus the bank fee).
- If the race is canceled for any reason during the period from October 19, 2026. until 30.10.2026. – we will refund 70% of the paid amount (minus the bank fee) and send the t-shirts by mail
If one or both team members are prevented from competing due to illness or force majeure, these cases will be resolved by direct contact. In the boxing ring. We appeal to the teams, if for any reason they cannot compete, to contact the organizer as soon as possible at joker@piktogram42.hr.
Any changes to name, surname, gender and other details are possible until October 19, 2026. After that date, it will not be possible to change the details of the team or team members. Please don’t ignore this limitation because the event is hihly personalized.
